Peridot is the birthstone for August and 16th anniversary gemstone. .
The August birthstone of the Peridot is considered to be the birthstone for Leo (The sign of the Lion) and relate to those born between July 23 - August 22. The Zodiac sign of Leo also responds to Onyx, Diamond, Carnelian, Sardonyx and Ruby .
Peridot is perhaps derived from the French word peritot which means unclear, probably due to the inclusions and cloudy nature of large stones. It could also be named from the Arabic word faridat which means gem. In either case, peridot has been mined as a gemstone for an estimated four thousand years or better, and is mentioned in the Bible under the Hebrew name of pitdah. .
Island of Zebirget also known as Saint John's island is still a supplier of excellent peridots as in antiquity. Other than this, even Burma and China were celebrated for their fine and large peridots. Then suddenly in mid 1990's, a big source of these vivid green gemstones was discovered in the valleys of Kashmir. These peridots had rich green color and following the success of the sapphires from the same region, these were offered as 'Kashmir peridots'.
Peridot is said to have helped dreams become a reality and has been given the symbol of fame, strength, and vitality. Peridot is found in Europe in medieval churches, heavily decorating treasures including the Cologne Cathedral. Egyptians referred to the stone as the "gem of the sun" and even believed it had the ability to lower anxiety, enhance verbal communication, and help in the success of marriages. .
Because the stone is relatively soft, peridot jewelry needs to be protected from harder jewelry and metals in your jewelry box. Store it in a soft pouch of its own to keep other gems from scratching or marring the surface. Clean peridot in warm water with dishwashing detergent, or a mild commercial solution. Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasives which can damage the surface and destroy the luster. You can use a small amount of ammonia in the water to help brighten the stone if it's excessively dirty. Soak in dishwater solution for 10 to 20 minutes, then scrub thoroughly but gently with a soft brush. Rinse and dry well before storing. Have jewelry professionally cleaned every one to two years. .
